Fairtrade

In September 2007 we were delighted to see Callington awarded Fairtrade Town status by the Fairtrade organisation. Although a small town of around 5000 inhabitants (sandwiched between Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor) it exhibits a high degree of community spirit, Local businesses and other establishments have taken the Fairtrade principles seriously and have made great efforts to support the initiative.

The world today needs fair trade more than it needs free trade, which only benefits the wealthy.. Fair trade ensures that producers in developing countries earn a fair wage and a fair price for the goods or products they trade. Free trade, by contrast, sees traders trying to eke out a living by selling products at below market rates in order to survive. Happily the developed world is becoming aware of their plight and is seeking ways of giving them a fair deal. Fairtrade is a world leader in addressing the problem.

For the Common Good

I wonder how many others, like me, are repulsed by the apparent greed of the banking world? As we listen to the various discussions on TV and radio no one, it seems, has put their finger on the underlying issue. Greed.

OK, so 5000 bankers in UK are getting bonuses in excess of £1 million each - and other bankers seek to justify that to the taxpayers. They do so on the basis that the best bankers would go elsewhere - and we can't afford to lose them.

But how about their concern for the common good? If the UK is in a financial hole let's each dig in and do something out of concern for the common good. Or is that old-fashioned?
